Grasping The Context

Grasping the context of scripture is vital to understanding what is being said. Context consist of the parts before and after a certain statement that influences the final meaning. You see just taking a scripture and quoting it alone may leave a broad path of interpretation. When scripture was originally used the was only one thing that was being inferred in the context of the writing. The epistles were letters that were written to specific people about specific situations. In the writings statements were made concerning that particular problem or situation. It may apply to other situations but only in the same context. An example would be counsel concerning marriage. Many other have marriages and the principals laid out in say 1 Cor 7 applies in those passages but also in other discussions concerning marriage. If we change the context though we may also compromise the biblical principal that was established in 1 Corinthians 7. This is just one example, there are many others throughout scripture. Example 1 Cor 7:9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. You see some would take the verse in 2 Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? They may then use that script to say it is ok to divorce because we are unequally yoked. However the surrounding text in 1 Cor 7 does not give that same permission or at least not that simple. You see while it may seem these two script go together they actually don't. 1 Cor 7 is dealing with marriage and 2 Cor 6 is dealing with fellowship, a different context altogether.

There certainly are many other examples but that is one commonly misused. While it is a good idea to marry in the same belief patterns 1 Cor 7 gives clear guidelines for resolution if you are unequal in marriage, such as you are married and one person gets saved and the other one don't. The believer is not free to just walk away. I pray that this jolts your thinker into action concerning CONTEXT and its great value. #STILLKEEPINGTHEFAITH
